He waved at me while he was drinking the bottle.
he is thirteen months old. it was 6:35 in the evening. i had just made him his bottle for bed. he was in the crook of one arm, the bottle in his mouth, the room half-lit because we were already in the wind-down stretch. i leaned over & kissed him on the forehead like i always do at this point in the evening.
& his hand came up & he started waving.
he usually says it. "bye-bye." sometimes "ba-bye." the sound comes out alongside the gesture, the two of them paired & arriving together. tonight the sound did not come. his mouth was on the bottle. the bottle was the priority. so the wave went solo. just the hand.
he is already learning how to hold two things at once.
a small body. a bottle. a kiss. a wave. nothing in the moment was difficult. the household was settling. nothing was at stake. & still, inside that quiet minute, a thirteen-month-old made a triage decision. the bottle was the work. the wave was the relationship. he held both. he let the work take the active attention. he let the relationship stay on the lighter channel. he did not drop either one.
i am pretty sure that is what people are supposed to be doing in the next twenty years.
i was right about social media. i was right about bitcoin. i was right about ai. i remain of the mind that the capacity that is going to matter most in lucian's adult life is the muscle for holding more than one commitment at the same time, & letting the substrate dictate which one gets the active attention without dropping the others.
ai is not going to give people that muscle. ai is going to keep promising to remove the need for it.
the entire pitch of the next product cycle is going to be: you do not have to choose. you do not have to triage. let the agent run six things in parallel. let the model pre-decide which conversation gets your evening. let the inbox sort itself. let the calendar reroute around you. you do not have to be the one holding the line between what is urgent & what is here.
that pitch is true at the desk. it is not true at home.
at home there is no agent that can hold the wave while the bottle goes in his mouth. the bottle is in his mouth or it is not. the wave is in his hand or it is not. the kiss is on his forehead or it is not. & he is the one who has to decide which of those gets the active attention in the next ninety seconds. nobody can do that math for him.
he is already doing it.
the part i am not going to clean up.
i am the parent who outsources triage all day. i have agents writing follow-ups while i answer slack while i build a payment link while a discovery call sits on the calendar at 1pm. the work is already a place where the muscle of holding under load has been replaced by a tool that holds for me.
then i go upstairs at 6:35pm with a bottle in one hand & a small body in the other. & there is no agent in the room. there is only the bottle, the kiss, the wave, & the small set of things i can hold at the same time without dropping any of them. the household demands the muscle the office has been quietly retiring.
if i lose that muscle in the house too, i lose the house.
so the wave tonight was not just his discovery. it was mine watching him discover it. he did the small version of the thing i forget to do all day. the smaller body modeled the move for the larger body in the room.
a thirteen-month-old is not going to remember tonight. but the wave is data. it is the first version of the question. can you hold the relationship while the necessity is in your mouth. can you let the bottle be the bottle without telling the wave to wait.
the answer tonight was yes. small yes. silent yes. just the hand.
the room he is growing up inside is going to keep offering to let him drop the wave. the whole architecture of his world will keep promising he can pick one thing & let the others run on autopilot. the muscle he was using tonight is the muscle the world is most actively trying to atrophy.
so i sat there with him & finished the bottle. he stayed quiet on the wave. i did not say anything. i did not try to teach the moment or talk him into the next gesture. the kiss had already been received. the bottle was running. the wave was up. nothing else needed to be added.
What I am holding onto
a thirteen-month-old can already hold two commitments at the same time & let the substrate dictate which one gets the active attention without dropping the other. that is not multitasking. that is the proto-form of being here while doing the necessary thing without dropping the relationship.
the muscle of holding more than one thing under load is being quietly retired in the office. the household is the place where it still has to live. if i lose it in the house, i lose the house. the wave tonight was lucian modeling the move for me.
the room he is growing up inside is going to keep offering to let him drop the wave. the kiss, the bottle, the hand in the air. those were the substrate tonight. the question is whether the substrate stays available to him as the room around him keeps trying to remove it.
Cheers, JanCarlos
if this landed, reply & tell me about a recent moment when you watched a small body hold two commitments at once.
